On New Year’s Eve, Frosty’s Fat Bike Race Series will kick off its season with two events at Nordic Valley resort — a downhill race and a cross country race.
“We are thrilled to be returning to Nordic Valley for the fourth consecutive season,” says Randal Gibb, director of the race series. “The scenery at Nordic Valley is unparalleled, and our participants can’t get enough of the thrill of the downhill race. It’s not every day you get to ride a bike down a groomed ski run at 40+ miles per hour!”
In the downhill race, riders take the ski lift to the top of the mountain and ride down. The cross-country race is between 6–20 miles on snow trails depending on the race category selected.
What’s all this Fat Bike Talk
Gibb, who owns Mad Dog Cycles in Orem, Utah, started producing races for fat bikers in 2012.
“People love riding fat bikes in the snow because it means they can experience many of the same places they ride in the summer, but in a totally new light,” Gibb explains. “Our races allow them to keep competing, and to meet other people who are passionate about the outdoors and fat biking.”
Chris Stuart, a Park City resident, races traditional mountain bikes and fat bikes. In past seasons, he has won the fat bike national championship for his age division. He plans to compete in Frosty’s Nordic Valley, as well as other Frosty’s events this season.
“Frosty’s races are a lot of fun and everyone is just amped up,” Stuart says. “Each event has amazing views, and they’re held in places that we would never be able to go into and ride on otherwise.”
After Nordic Valley, Frosty’s will hold four more events during January and February: Sundance and Brian Head resorts in Utah, Sun Valley Resort in Idaho, and Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada.
