Hops on the Hill at Stein Eriksen Lodge

Written by Scott Cullins
As I summited Parley’s, I silently celebrated as my car’s digital thermometer went down one final degree—it was officially 12 degrees cooler than where I started in the Salt Lake Valley. Cool weather and the promise of beer, food and live music awaited at Stein Eriksen Lodge’s first Hops on the Hill event of the summer season.

Hops on the Hill is held on Tuesday evenings and pairs Utah craft beers with a menu developed by Stein Eriksen Lodge Executive Chef Zane Holmquist’s culinary team. I was looking forward to the beer—provided by Squatters Craft Beers on my visit—and a menu that pulls from local farmers and farmers’ markets.

The venue was fantastic and the food and beer did not disappoint. Chef Holmquist (above) and his team served happy guests on the Flagstaff Deck of the Stein Eriksen Lodge at Deer Valley.

Holmquist emphasized Hops on the Hill shows off the more casual side of Stein Eriksen. “People always think [they] gotta go to Stein’s for a wedding anniversary or special occasion,” said Holmquist, “Come up in your shorts, come up after mountain biking—have a great beer and a great few bites and enjoy yourself.”

As the craft beer and food tasting wound down, a local jazz band kicked in on the lawn, providing great sounds for the tasting guests. The lodge also offered food for guests who showed up just for the free music.

All in all, it’s a great way to spend a Tuesday evening.
